Coderina Education and Technological Foundation, on Monday, June 7 2021, donated two sets of First Tech Challenge robotics kits to the University of Lagos Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Laboratory (AIROL).
Speaking at the donation, Chairman of Coderina’s Board of Trustees, Mr Femi Niyi, expressed delight at being able to finally deliver the kits to the Laboratory. He affirmed that the Foundation shares the passion of the Robotics Laboratory to catch youngsters young and equip them for the future with the knowledge of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics.
Dr. Chika Yinka-Banjo, the Lead and Principal Investigator of the Laboratory, was full of praises for Coderina, which she said has been supportive of AIROL since 2020, connecting the Laboratory with international partners and exposing its students to competitions of various kinds. She also appreciated the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS, who she said has been unrelenting in setting high standards of performance for her and the Laboratory.
The Vice-Chancellor commended the generosity of Coderina and the passion of Dr Yinka-Banjo. He remarked that the university system in Nigeria needs more of such gestures in order to enhance its capacity to train and equip students for a fast-emerging future. He harped on the determination of the University of Lagos to re-orient the teaching of students and their project research toward relevance to the economy and societal usefulness.
Also present at the event were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Professor Ayodele Atsenuwa; Director of the Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Centre (ESDC), Dr. Sunday Adebisi and students of the Laboratory. The University of Lagos Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Laboratory was established in 2018 following a doctoral grant won by its Lead and Principal Investigator, Dr. Chika Yinka-Banjo. It scouts for and trains youngsters in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics as a way of giving back to the community and preparing the young ones for an empowered future.
